Bellissima Florence and Pisa

While staying in the lovely town of Montecatini, we set off on a day trip that gave us a rich taste of Tuscany; beginning with the timeless beauty of Florence and ending with a quick but iconic visit to Pisa.

We arrived in Florence in the morning, ready to explore. The weather was perfect, overcast with the sun popping out occasionally. It kept the heat down, making it ideal for walking and sightseeing without the usual summer intensity.

Our first stop was the Ponte Vecchio, the historic bridge lined with goldsmith shops. We strolled across, taking in the views of the Arno River and the vibrant energy that seems to pulse through the heart of Florence.

Next, we wandered into the Piazza del Duomo, where the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore towers above everything. Before going inside, we made a short detour to the Bargello Museum, a peaceful treasure trove of Renaissance sculpture. Highlights included works by Donatello and Michelangelo. Quietly stunning and less crowded than many other sites.

Then we joined the line to visit the Duomo complex: the grand cathedral, its atmospheric crypt, the octagonal Baptistery of San Giovanni with its incredible bronze doors, and the accompanying museum. Each space offered a different lens on Florence’s history, art, and devotion to beauty.

By lunchtime, we were ready to relax and refuel. We found a charming local restaurant and enjoyed a leisurely outdoor lunch—perfectly Tuscan. The highlight was a glass of Chianti, robust and smooth and for James a beer; which paired beautifully with the food and the moment.

In the afternoon, we made a brief stop in Pisa on our way back. Of course, we couldn’t resist the classic Leaning Tower photo, and yes, we fully embraced the tradition. Silly, fun, and absolutely part of the experience.

Back in Montecatini, we ended the day with a delicious dinner at a local restaurant, tired but happy. The balance of culture, food, scenery, and even the weather made it a truly unforgettable day. Florence and Pisa left their mark;  uniquely Tuscan.
off to Rome tomorrow.
