The Postojna Caves and Ljubljana

From Caves to Castles and Culinary Delights

Today’s adventure took us from the historic canals of Venice to the cultural heart of Slovenia, with a spectacular stop along the way at the Postojna Caves.

Spanning more than 24 kilometers, this remarkable karst cave system was unlike anything we’ve experienced. We began with a surreal train ride deep into the earth, followed by a guided walk through towering chambers filled with ancient stalactites and stalagmites. The natural beauty of the caves was breathtaking; raw, vast, and humbling. It offered a striking contrast to the man made marvels we’ve seen throughout Europe. While cathedrals, palaces, and museums speak of human artistry, the caves reminded us of nature’s quiet power and timeless craftsmanship.

After resurfacing, we grabbed a quick lunch, a Wick burger on a black bun that looked dramatic but turned out to be light and delicious. Then we continued on to Ljubljana.

Once settled into our hotel, we took a relaxing stroll along the Ljubljanica River, enjoying the peaceful vibe of the city. We notice the abundance of dogs on our travels and today we met a gorgeous Saint Bernard. We met our group at the Dragon Bridge, a whimsical icon of Ljubljana, before riding the funicular up to the castle. The views from the top were stunning; red rooftops, rolling hills, and a city that balances charm and simplicity. A climb to the top of the spiral staircase in the tower gave a 360-degree panorama.

At the castle, we sampled some excellent local Slovenian wines, each with its own unique character and story.

Dinner was a delicious introduction to traditional Slovenian flavors: mushroom soup in a bread bowl, followed by a golden chicken schnitzel, and finished with a dessert of prekmurska gibanica and palačinka;  rich, comforting, and deeply satisfying.

After dinner, we wandered through a few local craft shops, picking up some handmade souvenirs before heading back to the hotel to rest.

From the ancient, natural wonder of the Postojna Caves to the cozy charm of Ljubljana’s old town, today was a beautiful blend of nature, history, and culture. Tomorrow Zagreb!
