A wee trip up to Glasgow

Sometimes the best adventures are the ones that blend spontaneity with meaningful plans. Our last minute trip to Glasgow from Edinburgh was well worth it to compare the cities and connect to family origins.

We hopped on the train from Edinburgh and found ourselves sitting at a table on our travels. There’s something charming about train travel in Scotland: the rolling green landscapes, the sight of black faced sheep, little villages, and the relaxing rhythm of the journey. In just under an hour, we arrived in Glasgow, ready to explore.

For Natasha, this visit carried a special weight, her grandmother had left Glasgow for Australia in 1926, and being in the city stirred a quiet sense of connection. The warmth of the people made an immediate impression. There’s a grounded, open friendliness in Glasgow that wraps around you like a cozy scarf, which we definitely needed. It was a wee bit chilly!

To make the most of our time, we jumped on the Hop On Hop Off bus tour. It was a beautiful, sunny day, but definitely cool up on the open top deck! We bundled up and took in the city’s highlights from above: the towering Glasgow Cathedral, the creativity of the West End, the Riverside Museum, and more. The commentary added depth to what we saw, giving us a great mix of history, humor, and local insight. Such a different city to Edinburgh but well worth the visit.

On the train ride back to Edinburgh, we were struck by the sight of wind turbines stretching for miles across the countryside. Scotland’s commitment to renewable energy is inspiring, powerful and undeniably present. We couldn’t help but reflect on how much more Australia could be doing in that space. It was a moment that sparked both admiration and a bit of longing.

Shortly after we returned to Edinburgh, Micky’s train from Durham arrived, perfectly timed. She had come up for a planned visit from Durham, and we were so happy to see her.

Dinner was delicious Indian food, full of bold flavors, shared dishes, and the kind of catch up conversation that flows easily between friends. Afterwards, we headed to The Stand Comedy Club, where the host, Jay, was absolutely fantastic. Her sharp wit, hilarious crowd work, and infectious energy made for a night of genuine belly laughs.

It was one of those days that reminded us how special it is to mix spontaneity with connection, to explore a new city, then return to friendship and laughter. Our quick trip to Glasgow and evening in Edinburgh was one for the books and we’re so glad Micky was there to share it with us.

We’re already looking forward to the adventures tomorrow, exploring Edinburgh with Michaela. The fun continues!
