From Hungary with Love

Budapest swept us off our feet from the moment we stepped into the opulent New York Café; often called the most beautiful café in the world. It’s easy to see why. Gold gilded ceilings, frescoes, chandeliers, and a grand atmosphere made even the simplest moment feel luxurious. We started our day here with a gold carat hot chocolate and a latte, possibly the most expensive hot drinks we’ve ever ordered, but absolutely worth it for the setting alone.

From there, we hopped on the Hop-On Hop-Off Bus, using it as our scenic chariot to Castle Hill. A short but scenic ride on the funicular lifted us up to a fairytale world of cobbled streets, grand historic buildings, and stunning views across the Danube.

Up at the castle, a surprise moment made the day even more memorable. Igot to hold a hawk named Igor! His handler was offering brief encounters, and I couldn’t resist. He got a good laugh when I told him my name was Natasha. “Like a spy and a falcon!” he joked. It was a completely exhilarating experience, holding this magnificent bird while surrounded by centuries of history.

Next stop: the breathtaking St. Stephen’s Basilica. We joined a small group tour (just the four of us!) and were fortunate to have a passionate guide who brought Hungarian history and saints’ stories to life. After the tour, I climbed the steps up to the dome, (a bit of a workout), but rewarded with panoramic views over the city, framed by towers and rooftops that stretched into the distance.

Our afternoon unfolded in style as we continued our journey to Heroes’ Square, an impressive plaza with commanding statues and deep historical significance. Just nearby, we found a charming tea house by Lake Városliget, decorated with vintage ice skating memorabilia, as in winter the lake is a rink. From our window seat, we enjoyed afternoon tea while gazing across the water to the fairytale like Vajdahunyad Castle.

Back on the bus, we cruised through the city once more, admiring Budapest’s eclectic mix of architecture and absorbing the rhythm of city life. As the sun began to lower, we made our way up Gellért Hill to the Liberty Statue, standing tall in tribute and strength. The views from here were, once again, stunning.

But the day wasn’t over. In fact, the best was yet to come.

We boarded a dinner cruise on the Danube, and as the sun dipped beyond the horizon, the city transformed into a sea of lights. The Parliament building, bridges, and Buda Castle lit up like a dream. Truly, no words can do the sight justice. It was a magical, emotional highlight; calm, romantic, and unforgettable.

After the cruise, we strolled over to Margaret Island, where the night wrapped up with the musical fountain light show, a playful, colorful end to a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we continue on to Vienna via Bratislava, but part of our hearts will surely remain here, in this captivating, grand, and generous city called Budapest.
