Today was one of those travel days that packed in more than we expected; emotion, beauty, history, and a few surprises along the way.
We left Prague this morning with a touch of regret. Our time there felt far too short. It’s a city that begs to be lingered in, with its winding streets, majestic castles, and dreamy architecture. There’s just something magical about it, and we both wished we’d had at least another day to soak it all in.
Our lunch stop was in Dresden, and we arrived to find the city unusually quiet. As it turns out, today is both Ascension Day and Father’s Day in Germany; a double holiday that meant many businesses were closed and the streets were serene. It gave Dresden an almost hushed atmosphere, which somehow made its story even more striking. The buildings are absolutely incredible; grand, ornate, and filled with character. Knowing the city was nearly reduced to rubble during World War II, it’s astonishing to see how beautifully it has been rebuilt. There’s a quiet strength in those restored facades, and walking among them was both moving and inspiring.
From there, we continued on to Berlin, only to discover that our hotel is about 45 minutes outside the city center. Not exactly what we had hoped for after a long drive, but the hotel itself is adequate; clean, functional, and comfortable enough for a few nights. Once we settled in, we headed out on a driving tour of Berlin. It was a great way to get an overview of the city and its iconic landmarks; the Brandenburg Gate, the remains of the Berlin Wall, and so many spots where history has unfolded in dramatic ways. Berlin has a unique energy: modern and raw, layered with stories that demand to be heard.
Dinner tonight was delicious. Hearty, satisfying German fare that hit the spot after a full day of travel and sightseeing. Now we’re back at the hotel, full, tired, and ready for what tomorrow brings. Berlin has already intrigued us, and we can’t wait to dive deeper into everything this incredible city has to offer.
