Today was one of those jam packed travel days that leaves you exhausted in the best way. Berlin is massive; buzzing with life; layered with history; and full of surprises around every corner. But if we’re being honest, we’re not fans of the long train ride in and out from our hotel. It definitely made us wish we were staying closer to the action. Still, once we hit the city, Berlin delivered.
We kicked things off with a visit to the iconic Berlin TV Tower. Natasha went all the way to the top (just fit in the lift); while James stayed down below, taking in the atmosphere and being the ever patient support crew. The views from the top were incredible; Berlin sprawling in every direction; a real mix of history and modern life.
Then it was time to hop on the hop on hop off bus, which turned out to be a brilliant way to see the city and learn more about its incredible past. Along the way, we saw the Brandenburg Gate; the Reichstag; Berlin Cathedral; the Victory Column; Museum Island; Potsdamer Platz; Alexanderplatz; and more. Each stop revealed another layer of this complex and fascinating place.
Checkpoint Charlie gave us a real sense of the tension and division that once defined this city. One of the most moving sights we passed was the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. Severely damaged during World War II, its ruined spire still stands tall; left deliberately unrestored as a haunting reminder of the destruction caused by war. Beside it, the modern section of the church has been beautifully restored, creating a powerful contrast between past and present. Not far away, we visited the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, also known as the Holocaust Memorial. This striking field of 2,711 raised concrete slabs, or “stelae,” stretches across a city block, creating an unsettling, maze like experience meant to evoke a sense of loss, confusion, and absence. It’s a powerful tribute to the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and a space for quiet reflection in the heart of Berlin.
The East Side Gallery was another highlight. The murals on the remaining section of the Berlin Wall were stunning; powerful; emotional; and sometimes even humorous. It’s inspiring to see how Berlin has transformed such a dark chapter into a living, breathing piece of art.
Lunch was a quick but satisfying bratwurst with mustard and fresh bread; simple and very Berlin. James added a traditional steiner of beer to complete the experience; the perfect refreshing reward after a morning of sightseeing.
We kept going in the afternoon; more stories; more sights; more of Berlin’s unforgettable energy. And before heading back, we treated ourselves to an amazing steak dinner in the city. The steak was tender; juicy; cooked to perfection. Easily one of the best meals we’ve had this trip. Our waiter was a total standout; friendly; funny; and genuinely great at what he does. Five stars, no question.
Eventually, we made our way back to the hotel (hello again, long train ride…); full, thoughtful and ready for the next adventure. Berlin, you were big, bold and brilliant. Tomorrow: Amsterdam - we’re coming for you.
