Luxembourg to Heidelberg

After our wine tasting in the Champagne region this morning, we hit the road again,  setting off on a journey that would take us through three countries in one day.

Heading northeast, we crossed into Luxembourg, driving through quiet countryside dotted with wind turbines turning slowly in the breeze. When we reached Luxembourg City, we were struck by its striking blend of old and new. The capital is perched dramatically over gorges, with grand stone bridges connecting districts and elegant buildings rising along cobbled streets. The old quarters had a sense of timelessness, while the modern government buildings added a sharp contrast.

After a quick break, we crossed into Germany; our third country of the day. The landscape grew greener and more wooded, and the timber-framed buildings began to appear, straight out of a storybook. Wind turbines continued to spin on distant hillsides as we made our way toward Heidelberg.

We arrived in the early evening, greeted by the charm of its old town. Narrow lanes led us toward the Neckar River, with beautifully preserved buildings lining the way. Above it all, Heidelberg Castle stood above on the hill, bathed in golden light. The town’s architecture had that classic German elegance; gabled roofs, painted shutters, and a sense of history.

We ended the day with a hearty, traditional dinner: bratwurst and roast turkey breast served with all the right sides and a cold local beer. After crossing borders and rivers, passing through centuries of architecture and open landscapes, it was the perfect close to a full and beautiful day.
