Our journey from Heidelberg to Lucerne was nothing short of magical.
We set off from Heidelberg in the morning, rolling through the lush countryside of southwestern Germany. Our first stop: the Black Forest, home of dark pines, fairytale legends, and the beloved cuckoo clock. We pulled into a delightful shop nestled in the hills, where hand carved wooden timepieces lined the walls like works of art. I would have loved to buy one but ran out of time at the short stop.
From the forest, we continued on to one of Europe’s most breathtaking natural sights: Rhine Falls. The roar of the cascading water was the first thing we heard. Then we saw it: the largest waterfall in Europe, in full, thunderous force. But the real thrill came when we boarded a boat and headed right into the mist. We climbed out onto the rock tower in the middle of the falls, feeling the spray on our faces and the power of the water rumbling beneath our feet. It was exhilarating and unforgettable.
By afternoon, we crossed the border into Switzerland and arrived in Lucerne, where the charm didn’t let up. After settling in, we explored the iconic Musegg Wall, a medieval rampart that still stands guard over the old town. We climbed the wall and Natasha climbed the Clock Tower! Yes, the very place where Lucerne’s oldest clock still chimes every hour, proudly ringing before all others in the city. From the top, we were rewarded with sweeping views over Lucerne, its lake shimmering in the evening light, the snow-dusted Alps in the distance.
As the day wound down, we returned to our hotel where a cozy dinner and drinks with some of our tour companions brought a perfect end to a packed but wonderful day. There’s something special about swapping stories and laughter over a meal after a shared adventure.
From the tick of a cuckoo clock to the thunder of a waterfall and the chime of ancient bells; today was truly a symphony of sights and sounds we won’t soon forget. Lucerne, we’re so glad to be here.
